Artemis alternatives, checked November 2026

If you want to pay once and keep the sun path and depth of field, Cutvey Viewfinder is the alternative to try: one $19.99 purchase, kits that mix lens series, and an Apple Watch remote. Cadrage, the most-reviewed one-time viewfinder, is the other strong pick. Cutvey Viewfinder also puts a clean feed on the monitor at the truck. None of them streams the frame to other phones on set the way Artemis does, so if you need that, stay where you are.

Why people look past Artemis

Artemis is a serious tool with a long record, and plenty of DPs will be right to keep it. The reasons people look elsewhere are practical:

  • The price model. Artemis is free to download and runs on a subscription or a Core License, with add-ons for the sun path and an external camera. Some people would rather pay once.
  • The iOS floor. Artemis needs iOS 18. An older iPhone kept for scouting may not run it.
  • Depth of field. The Artemis pages we read advertise no depth of field calculator.
  • The wrist. Artemis has no Apple Watch app.

What you give up by leaving

Be clear about this before you switch. Artemis does several things none of the alternatives here document:

  • Streaming to nearby Artemis users, so others on set watch the frame on their own devices. Cutvey Viewfinder covers the monitor itself, with a clean feed on a cable or AirPlay, but not this.
  • A database updated inside the app, weekly by Chemical Wedding's account, between App Store releases.
  • External Camera Mode, a UVC camera on iPad.
  • XR Stand-ins at life size with shadows, which real objects can hide on LiDAR devices.
  • A family of apps: Artemis Studio on the Mac, Artemis XR on Vision Pro, and iCloud sync between them.

If your production depends on any of these, the alternatives below are a step back on that job.

Each alternative, fairly

Cadrage Director's Viewfinder

The most common answer to "Artemis alternative", and a fair one. Cadrage, from Vienna, has been on the App Store since 2014 and has the most ratings in the category. It frames cine and photo formats, supports anamorphic and speedboosters, draws a sun path since version 6.0.1, and since 6.1.1 shares a camera setup by link or QR code. It selects one lens series at a time, and depth of field is a separate Cadrage app. Cadrage and Cutvey Viewfinder, side by side.

Cutvey Viewfinder

Ours, and the one to try if you want the most camera and lens data for one payment. It frames 722 camera bodies in 2,309 recording modes with 3,926 lenses, counted November 2, 2026, each mode with a source line. Kits can mix series. The sun path, depth of field, looks with your own `.cube` LUTs, stand-in figures sized to the distance, video takes and three depths of PDF shot list are all in the one purchase, and the Apple Watch remote comes with it. It sends a clean feed to a monitor on a cable or to an AirPlay screen, though it does not stream to other phones on set. It is also included per seat in a Cutvey plan (pricing). It has no sync and no ratings yet. Cutvey Viewfinder and Artemis.

Lightframer Pro

The newest serious rival, at the same price as Cadrage and ours. Its 3D shadow map and life-size AR stand-ins are closer to Artemis's XR features than anything else here, and it adds storyboards with an animatic export. Its database is smaller by its own count, "50+ Cinema Cameras" and "90+ Lens Series", so check your camera first. Lightframer Pro and Cutvey Viewfinder.

Magic ViewFinder

One free app per camera maker, with banner ads unless you buy Premium in each. Good for an owner-operator who shoots one brand. The Magic apps and Cutvey Viewfinder.

Mark II, Viewfinder Preview and FrameUp

Mark II and Viewfinder Preview are stills tools: Mark II for DNG captures and medium format backs (compared here), Viewfinder Preview for film photographers who want a light meter in the same app. Viewfinder Preview's last update was in May 2025. FrameUp is a clean, fast framer with a usable free tier, suited to students.

Moving from Artemis to Cutvey Viewfinder

There is no import from Artemis, so the move is a short rebuild:

  1. Open Setup from the strip at the top of the viewfinder and pick your camera and its recording mode. Search by maker or model.
  2. Build the kit from the lens series' grid, and add primes from another series if the package mixes them.
  3. Add anything rehoused or one-off as your own lens series, with its squeeze and image circle, or request it to be added to the database.
  4. Save the setup as a favorite, so the whole package comes back with one tap from the quick-swap card.
  5. Pair your Apple Watch and open the Watch app with the iPhone app on the viewfinder.

Questions

What is the best alternative to Artemis Director's Viewfinder?

Cutvey Viewfinder, for the largest counted camera and lens list with the sun path and depth of field in one $19.99 purchase. Cadrage, for the most-reviewed one-price viewfinder. Lightframer Pro, for AR stand-ins and a 3D shadow map.

Is there an Artemis alternative without a subscription?

Yes. Cadrage, Cutvey Viewfinder and Lightframer Pro are each $19.99 once on the App Store, and Mark II and Viewfinder Preview are single purchases too, checked November 2026.

Can any alternative put the frame on an on-set monitor like Artemis TV?

Yes, Cutvey Viewfinder. It sends a clean feed to a monitor on a cable, such as HDMI through a USB-C display adapter, or to an AirPlay screen such as an Apple TV, with a lower third and a recording tally. None of the other alternatives here documents a monitor feed, and none streams to nearby phones the way Artemis does.

Does any alternative update its database inside the app?

Not that we found. Cutvey Viewfinder and Cadrage add cameras and lenses with app updates. Artemis says it updates its database weekly, inside the app.

Will Cutvey Viewfinder run on my older iPhone?

It needs iOS 17 or later, which in practice means iPhone XS or XR and newer. Artemis needs iOS 18 and Cadrage 18.6.
