Cutvey Viewfinder and Cadrage, side by side

Cadrage costs $19.99 once, the same as Cutvey Viewfinder, and both run on iPhone and iPad, so the choice is about the work. Cadrage has by far the most ratings in the category, and its kit setups can be shared by link or QR code. Cutvey Viewfinder lets one kit mix lenses from different series and keeps depth of field in the same app, with an Apple Watch remote on top.

Start with the kit: an interview with lenses from two series

A two-camera interview for a company documentary, in a boardroom with a window wall. A camera is an ARRI ALEXA Mini LF in 4.3K LF 16:9. The rental house has ZEISS Supreme Primes at 25, 35, 50 and 85 on the order and fills the long end with an ARRI Signature Prime 125, because the Supreme 135 is out. B camera is a Sony FX9 in FF 6K 16:9 on a Sigma Cine FF High Speed 85. The client also wants a 4:5 cut for social.

How it goes in Cutvey Viewfinder

  1. Open Setup and pick the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF, the 4.3K LF 16:9 mode and a 1.78 frame, with a 4:5 line drawn inside it for the social cut.
  2. In the kit builder, tap 25, 35, 50 and 85 in the Supreme Prime grid, then open the Signature Prime grid and add the 125. One kit, two series: the app calls it Mixed primes.
  3. Save it as a favorite. Make a second one for B camera: Sony FX9, FF 6K 16:9, the Sigma 85. The quick-swap card on the viewfinder flips between the two while you stand in the subject's eyeline.
  4. Turn on the seated stand-in figure at 2.5 m. It is sized from the frame's vertical field of view, so you can judge headroom on the 50 and the 85 before anyone sits down, and it says whether it falls in focus.
  5. Open depth of field for the 85 at T1.5 at 2.5 m. The circle of confusion follows the large-format gate (0.030 mm), and the focus band comes out well under 10 cm. That tells the 1st AC what a lean forward will cost.
  6. Check the sun panel for when the window wall takes direct sun, then take a still of each setup. Every still's EXIF names the simulated camera and lens.
  7. Export a Basic PDF, two shots a page with camera, mode, lens and notes, for the gaffer and the camera team.

How it goes in Cadrage

Cadrage frames the same formats from its own database, and since version 6.0.1 it has a sun path too. Its help center says you can select only one lens series at a time, so the Signature 125 goes in as a custom lens, or the kit splits across two Favorites. Depth of field lives in a separate Cadrage app, f8 Lens Toolkit. Where Cadrage is ahead on this job is the hand-off: since 6.1.1 you can send a camera setup to the B camera operator by link or QR code, and its PDF shot lists can upload straight to Dropbox. Cutvey Viewfinder sends files through the share sheet.

US ratings, November 2, 20264.74 from 3780 so far

Prices are Apple's US prices, checked November 2, 2026, on each app's App Store record. Ratings are US App Store counts on the same day, and they move daily. "Not stated" means we found nothing either way on the seller's own pages.

The source line is the quiet difference. Under each recording mode Cutvey Viewfinder prints the maker, how the figure was found and the date it was read. Of the 2,309 modes, 958 are read from a published figure, 1,245 are worked out from the published pixel pitch, and 108 carry a Provisional badge until a person has checked them again. Where Cadrage is ahead

  • Ratings. 4.74 from 378 US ratings, checked November 2, 2026, and on the App Store since 2014. Cutvey Viewfinder has none yet.
  • Family Sharing, by its App Store page.
  • Setups by link or QR code, for a crew that shares one camera package.
  • A pre-production suite. Cadrage Studio plans on iPhone, iPad and Mac with iCloud sync. Cutvey Viewfinder keeps shots on your devices and has no sync.
  • Calibration done for you. Its Tech Specs page says every supported iOS device is pre-calibrated. Cutvey Viewfinder reads each phone camera's field of view as it runs and gives you a MEASURE calibration per camera in Settings, which is a step you take yourself.

Pick Cadrage when

  • You want the most-reviewed one-price viewfinder in the category.
  • Your camera team passes kit setups around by QR code.
  • You already plan in Cadrage Studio.
  • Your whole kit comes from one lens series, so mixing never comes up.

Pick Cutvey Viewfinder when the kit is mixed, or when you want depth of field without a second app. More: how a lens kit is built, choosing a lens package, and how Cadrage sits beside Artemis and Lightframer Pro on the comparison hub.

Questions

Cadrage and Cutvey Viewfinder cost the same. What is the real difference?

The kit and the tools around it. Cutvey Viewfinder mixes primes from different series in one kit and has depth of field in the app. Cadrage has far more ratings, and it shares setups by QR code.

Can Cutvey Viewfinder share a setup with my crew?

Not as a setup. It shares stills, takes and PDF shot lists through the iOS share sheet, to AirDrop, Mail, Files or any app there. Cadrage can send a camera setup by link or QR code.

Do I need a second app for depth of field?

Not with Cutvey Viewfinder: near, far, total and hyperfocal are a panel beside the frame, with the circle of confusion chosen by the recording mode's gate. Cadrage sells depth of field as a separate app, f8 Lens Toolkit.

Which iPhones does each one run on?

Cutvey Viewfinder needs iOS 17 or iPadOS 17. Cadrage needs 18.6 or later, by its App Store page in November 2026.

Is the camera list in Cutvey Viewfinder checked against the makers?

Each recording mode says where its figure came from: 958 are read from a published figure, 1,245 are worked out from the published pixel pitch, and 108 are marked Provisional until a person checks them again. The frame is as accurate as those sources.
