What the Apple Watch remote's messages mean
The Watch remote needs watchOS 10 or later and the iPhone app open on the viewfinder, within reach. When the picture box shows a line instead of the frame, it names what is in the way.
The Watch is a remote for the iPhone: the iPhone frames, records and saves, and the Watch shows its picture at about one and a half frames a second. It works with an iPhone; an iPad has no Watch remote.

The lines in the picture box
- iPhone not reachable: the iPhone is out of range, switched off or in Airplane Mode. Bring the two closer.
- Open Viewfinder on iPhone: the iPhone is there but the app is not framing. It may be closed, in the background, locked, or on the locked screen. Open it on the viewfinder.
- Waiting for picture: the iPhone is framing and the first frame is on its way.
- Allow camera access on iPhone: the iPhone app has no camera permission.
- iPhone camera interrupted: the system has taken the camera, for example for a call.
- iPhone camera unavailable: the iPhone's camera failed or is not available.
- iPhone storage full: free some space on the iPhone.
- Photo not saved or Recording not saved: the last capture did not reach the iPhone's library.
After you press the shutter, a tick or a cross says whether the still was taken.
Reading the face
The badge shows the lens and its place in the kit, such as 3 of 6. CROWN CHANGES LENS means the Digital Crown steps through primes; CROWN TURNS THE ZOOM means it turns a zoom.
Check the link from the iPhone
On the iPhone, open Settings and look at Apple Watch, Status: Connected, Paired · not reachable, App not installed or No Apple Watch paired.
If that didn't work
If the status reads App not installed, install Viewfinder on the Watch from the Watch app on the iPhone. If it reads Paired · not reachable, open Viewfinder on the Watch with the iPhone app on the viewfinder.
