Guides and overlays: thirds, safe areas and grid

Open Overlays from the tools at the top of the viewfinder. Guides adds a center cross, action safe (90%), title safe (80%), thirds, the golden ratio and a grid; Appearance sets their color, thickness and opacity.

  1. Tap Overlays among the tools at the top of the viewfinder.
  2. Under Guides, turn on what you want. The grid can be set from 2 to 12 divisions each way.
  3. Under Appearance, pick the line color (White, Amber, Purple or Black), the line thickness and the guide opacity.
  4. Tap Done.

Clear All in the panel's header removes every guide, the secondary frame line and every stand-in figure at once, keeping their colors and opacities. Undo takes its place straight after, in case it was a slip.

What goes into a capture

The Capture section at the bottom of Overlays decides what is written into the picture you save:

  • Burn guides into captures: the frame line, guides and stand-in figures go into stills and takes.
  • Burn info strip into captures: the line of camera, lens and field of view goes under the frame.
  • Info strip on screen: shows the strip on the viewfinder.

All three are on by default. A look, when one is active, is always in the capture, and so is the band where a lens sees wider than the phone.

If that didn't work

If a guide does not show, check its opacity under Appearance, and that the line color stands out against the scene. The same line color and thickness rows are in Settings, Frame lines, so a change in one place shows in the other.
